Case Details
1.Six Hard Specs to Confirm

1.1. TLS/SSL encryption.
Industrial data includes equipment status, process parameters, and energy consumption. If intercepted or tampered with, the consequences go far beyond data leakage. Confirm native TLS/SSL support—not an external module or extra development.

1.2. EMC/EMI Level 3 compliance.
Factories are full of inverters, motors, and relays. A gateway that works in the lab may restart constantly on site. Ask for EMC test reports. Beilai gateways and EdgeIO products are tested to IEC 61000 series standards. EdgeIO BL190 offers Ethernet ESD protection up to ±6 kV/±8 kV and EFT up to 1 kV.

1.3. Industrial-grade core components.
Commercial chips run 0–70°C; industrial chips run −40–85°C. In outdoor cabinets or non-air-conditioned workshops, that difference decides whether the device works. Ask directly: “What is the main chip model, and is it industrial-grade?”

1.4. Wide temperature range −45°C to +85°C.
This range covers northern winter outdoor cabinets and southern summer workshops. Beilai ARMxy BL335 and EdgeIO BL190 are rated −40°C to +85°C. Also distinguish “startup temperature” from “operating temperature.”

1.5. Friendly configuration interface.
A gateway that needs handwritten config files and command-line logs slows deployment and maintenance. Beilai provides graphical configuration. BL110 is plug-and-play with register mapping and 5-minute deployment. BL118 offers Node-RED visual programming. EdgeIO BL190 has a built-in Web interface.

1.6. Independent hardware watchdog + software watchdog.
Unattended gateways need automatic recovery. A software watchdog restarts failed processes; a hardware watchdog forces a reset when software fails completely. Beilai ARMxy and EdgeIO use dual watchdog design for millisecond-level self-recovery. Treat “independent hardware watchdog” as a veto item.

2.Scenario-Based Selection: Gateway or EdgeIO

Choose one of two paths:

  • Gateway: You already have PLCs/DDC/meters and need protocol conversion and cloud connectivity.
  • EdgeIO: You have no PLC/DDC or want a leaner architecture with direct I/O and logic control.

3.Three Final Reminders

3.1. Compare lifecycle cost, not just price.
A gateway that is $30 cheaper may cause repeated downtime if EMC fails. EdgeIO is not a “more expensive I/O module”—it is a “cheaper PLC + gateway combination.”

3.2. Confirm software ecosystem sustainability.
Is firmware updated? Are new protocols free? Beilai V2.4.25 added WeChat/DingTalk alarms, IEC104 extensions, and Modbus bit read/write. EdgeIO supports BLRAT remote O&M.

3.3. Define “enough” vs. “best.”
If your team has no Node-RED experience, BL118 may become a maintenance burden. If you only need a few meters uploaded, BL110 is enough. The best choice matches your team and scenario—not the feature list.
